About me

I do community stuff

I’m a community consultant, who has been working on communities for the last 10 years. For the last 5 years, communities have been my full-time job.

I have been a communities lead across large organisations, set-up and led community programmes, and redesigned communities to improve power relations between stakeholders.

I’m currently running an amazing open-source community for the world’s best design system at Government Digital Service.

My Journey

Before working in government, I was a teacher for 10 years, where I ran a cross UK community for teachers to share learning resources. I also set-up numerous communities of practice programmes at colleges and universities I taught at.

My masters thesis was on Communities of Practice and I have been obsessed with them ever since. My knowledge of learning enables me to set up environments where knowledge sharing happens effectively.

I also consider myself an expert on developing training and love facilitating. Delivering education and developing curriculums for so long ensured I had plenty of practice at it.

Other stuff about me

I live in Yorkshire and am proudly northern. I founded GovCamp North, which is a public-sector unconference aiming to improve public-sector collaboration in the North of England.

I love travel and being outdoors. I mostly travel to places where I love the food. So I’ve travelled quite a lot of Asia and been to Italy several times.

I love Japanese culture, especially the history around the Edo Period. I have been reading manga for years, One Piece is my favourite.

I’m passionate about work that contributes positively to society. I am not a public servant by accident, I want to do work that makes a difference.
